Went into town to get some free hay at the store and darned if when we came home there wasnt silence and no one around.
I had locked up Big Daddy's girls, good thing. Only left the guineas out, the two peas, and and my wilder children as I dont really have an adequate pen for them yet.
Came home and all four of Tassles girl EE buddies are gone. They were just reaching close to laying age, and lil Muff's, Buttercups, and Cottontails feathers are in three piles over the acreage. Thats three...
Then five out of seven of Riderkens beautiful babies, had an up coming roo that was just gorgeous, he was going to have fantastic coloring.
Tassle is wandering around cheeping pitifully.
Without Big Daddy here to give them time to hide, it was a slaughter.
The girls shut in the pen/coop were all up on high roosts scared to death, not one egg out of 11 girls.
Sigh...I knew it would be back was hoping the wilder ones would fend, as they found hiding places so wonderfully before. But they had a fighter watching over them and this time they did not. Shoot, now i have to keep everyone shut up, cant believe both attacks were midafternoon. I would think more than one, since nine are gone...

Jill, I am so sorry!!!

Do you think this could be stray dogs running around?
Online
I dont have a clue. All I know is I am pretty sure its canine from all the tracks we saw in the mud the other day. I would think it was the work of more than one animal.
The bodies are gone, I thought dogs usually leave bodies all over, all there is is feather piles. I feel so sad for the lil ones, but I am not sure I could have corralled them easily, they have been running loose all summer, no prob and were as close to being wild as you could get, so I was hoping they would be alright. I always locked them up at night tho but even that was quite a process. I kind of feel like I should have left the garage open a bit and they might have tried to seek shelter there. Two piles of feathers are right next to the house, like within 10 feet.
They loved dustbathing on the south side right up against the house as it was sunny and the dirt is mostly dry due to the eaves of the house, nice soft dirt. I think they might have been caught in a dustbath, poor babes.

Well we found its the neighbors dog.
I called them tonite, they said they had found somethin in the yard, but was not sure it was a chicken. I asked if I needed to come get its body, she said she didnt think so.
If its my Fussy I want her back to bury her. I still am crying every night hoping she is ok as I go to bed. I really would like to know. She said it was brown.

Jill, you really need to go see what it was in your neighbor's yard, just for your own peace of mind!
It would be really sad if Fussy was taken by the dogs but at least you would know what happened to her.

Gawd! This makes me mad...not you Jill...your neighbor!
Stoopid people that let their dogs wander and have NO accountability for their actions!
What a waste of humanity!

Sorry you have such horrid neighbors Jill.
Anyone who lets their dogs wander and do damage to their neighbor's property is just horrible, IMO.

I am done venting...

Pedro, you would really mad if you heard what she said to me. Even tho she was sympathetic, it amounted to I am to keep my chickens penned up while her dog runs free, even tho there is almost half mile between our property, so its not like my chickens are anywhere NEAR her property.
And the hubby told me the other day when I asked him to just watch and make sure the dog didnt bring home my little hen, told me "if I see her in my yard to just yell at her"
Grrrrrr!

Jill, it really sucks that your long distance neighbors are like this.
Would animal control be able to help?
It would be such a shame for a couple of dogs to go missing!

Its only one dog...
Oh and I forgot to tell you all the GOOD news, the peachick came HOME this morning. I thought I heard him calling last night, so I yelled and yelled for him so he could get his bearings, it sounded way far off. Wasnt totally sure tho.
Then went to take care of the guineas and pea that I have had to lock up, poor things and there he was, outside the pen. Poor lil guy, temps were down to 23 the first night he was gone.
