I want to plant some blackberries, raspberries and the like. I am not a very patient kind of person so I was wondering how long before these bushes actually start producing fruit?
I found this link about the Blackberry plants.
The link below has when to expect fruit from them after they are planted.
Actually, the whole website is has a lot of great info about the plants...
You want to PLANT blackberries??? We pay people to get rid of them over here!!!!
YIKES!! BLACKBERRIES??? They only entertaining thing about blackberries is watching the wanna-be hippies picking them for the wineries. Ever seen a guy with dreadlocks stuck to a VERY thorny blackberry cane?
I love picking blackberries in the wild!! One of Mother Nature's perfect food!! And you gotta love those hippie-dreadlock people!!! They are cool!!!
I dont know anything about blackberries except the bushes are so prickly. I do love them tho, but I guess I will leave the growing to others. We did have one along our fence years ago, but it never produced, it just tried to "get us" when we mowed every time.
Let me know when you have producing vines, I LOVE blackberry cobbler, oh my!
The fruiting pattern will depend on what cultivar you get.
Two types of most commercially grown kinds of raspberry are available, the summer-bearing wild type that produces an abundance of fruit on second-year canes (floricanes) within a relatively short period in mid-summer, and double- or "ever"-bearing plants, which also bear some fruit on first-year canes (primocanes) in the late summer and fall, as well as the summer crop on second-year canes. Raspberries can be cultivated from hardiness zones 3 to 9.
We have a mixture of both, so we actually get fruit from June to late September. I got our canes from somebody at work, and can't believe how many we have now. Last year I canned 40 jars of seedless raspberry jam. All of our raspberries are red, but I hope to get some yellow ones too.
Thanks Dilbert! Now I know what to look for!!!
Actually, I shouldn't be so hard on blackberries. I love them. They make a great wine and Grandma's blackberry/apple pie was incredible. I just don't like the blood donor clinic that occurs every time I go picking
